NEWBURGH NEWS December 2022

Dear Resident,

There’s much to look forward to in Newburgh as we approach Christmas:

Village carols in the school with a brass band and refreshments; more carols, Christingle and a ukelele band concert in church plus a Christmas Fair Drop-in at school. More brass and live music in the pub; a magical Christmas Winter Wonderland at Applecast; lots of Christmas stock in the Post Office, trees and more at Cobbs Brow Nurseries and Wilton House Farm Shop. And when you need some fresh air take a wander round Appleton Fields and enjoy the meadow and wood.

One big thank you – to Giltrees who again have donated the tree on the Green.

Looking back at past glories in 2022 – what an outstanding Newburgh Fair and what magnificent fireworks from the Lions. Both were a blast (the latter literally!).

Happy Christmas!

Chris Moore

Newburgh School

A message from the Eco-Council…

Newburgh School is committed to supporting and caring for our local environment and wants to contribute to the world’s sustainability. Every year, two children from each year are chosen by their peers to become Eco- Councillors. We aim to raise environmental awareness across our local community. This year we have a number of projects we hope to complete:

• To raise the awareness of air pollution, eg dangers of car emissions.

• To encourage walking to school.

• To reduce single use plastic within the school.

• To educate all pupils on the importance of recycling.

• To create a spiritual garden

• To continue to build links with Appleton Fields.

Last school year, the Eco-Council successfully achieved the International Green Flag Award. We have also forged close links with Wilton House Farm Shop and have successfully

participated in the sowing of pumpkins, with their growth monitored before picking in October. We will be visiting the local food bank and Ormskirk Council Offices to find out more about how influential we can be in our role at Newburgh. We are looking forward to a very exciting year and hope that we can make a massive difference to the environment.

Appleton Fields Association

The Association is now a functioning Charity with eight Newburgh residents as Trustees. We are grateful to many residents who have volunteered to help with various tasks including creating more habitat in the wood and sowing experimental wild flower patches in the meadow. We are particularly pleased with a new hedge just planted along the eastern boundary, enhancing the habitat for the birds and the bees. Around 370 whips (small saplings) were provided by The Woodland

Trust with species including dog rose, cherry, rowan, elder and hazel. Thanks to Sandy

Beswick who master-minded the project. There have been two very successful fund raisers – a coffee morning organised by Jo Gerard and Ailsa Moore in Tom and Jo’s garden and a Charity Week run by the Red Lion. So many thanks to all involved. The next Volunteer Day is on Sat 26 November when we shall probably plant some more whips. The programme for the next Association meetings will be published in the New Year. If you’d like to know more contact the Chair, Chris Hayes (Tel 07973 684564) or the Secretary, Chris Moore (Tel 01257 463471) And follow https://www.facebook.com/appletonfieldsassociation

AppleCast

We have had quite a bit more development on site. Our feathered and furry family are continuing to grow with the addition of three beautiful red deer girls, Mr and Mrs Meerkat and a variety of breeding ducks, swan, pheasant, peacock, turkey and guinea fowl. Our new family have specifically built enclosures to ensure that their new homes are comfortable and safe.

At half term we enjoyed pumpkin picking and welcomed visitors from the local area and further afield to an excellent and well attended event.

We are now planning the Christmas Winter Wonderland events again with the return of the Tepees and Santa’s Grotto to make the experience magical. Once again thank you for your continued support to AppleCast – we look forward to seeing you all very soon. Very best wishes for Christmas and the New Year.

Crane Educational Foundation

The Crane Trust is a local charity, deriving from the 1717 will of Thomas Crane, the original Founder of Newburgh School. While its main focus has traditionally been on the

needs of the school and its pupils, trustees are also able to make small grants for educational, sporting and health-related purposes to children and young people in Newburgh and its

surrounding area or to groups serving those needs. The trustees are pleased to receive applications for support, considered in confidence. Contact tony.richardson50@btinternet.com, the Clerk to the trustees

Lions fireworks

Douglas Valley Lions Club would like to thank Martin Rath, Dave Ackland and all other organisations who assisted the Lions in making the fireworks display such a success, with a special thanks to all the residents of Newburgh, Parbold and surrounding areas for turning out to support the event. This year’s event has made a major contribution to our funds to enable the Lions to continue its work in assisting many people less fortunate than ourselves.

Dog Fouling in the Village

There has been an increase in dog fouling on pavements and in areas of open ground. Dog fouling is not only unsightly, it is also dangerous to anyone who falls/slips on it. Please be a responsible dog owner and clean up after your dog. All waste bins in the village can be used. Anyone caught fouling public places can be fined.
