NEWBURGH NEWS SEPTEMBER 2023
Dear Resident,
This is my first newsletter as the new Chair of the Parish Council. Firstly, a massive thanks to previous chair Chris Moore for his 20+ years of hard work and dedication to the Parish Council and to the village.
We’ve had an up and down summer, but were lucky to have good weather for another successful Newburgh Fair. Thanks to the organisers and all those who helped on the day.
The Parish Council continues to battle with the two main issues which affect the village – volume of traffic (including speeding) and flooding. We have invested in a new modern speed indicator device, which will be in position in October. This will enable us to download data each month on volumes and vehicles speeding through the village, which can be used to lobby the Police and the County Council.
This year we entered Newburgh in the Best Kept Village competition, but, unfortunately, we did not make the second round. We should have a report soon, so we can see what we need to do to improve next year, if we enter. Thank you to all those who did a great job helping to make the village look good and thanks to Apple Cast on the new pavement to their entrance.
Finally, we are still looking for two new Councillors. Please come along to a meeting to see what goes on and join us to have your say about your village.

Newburgh School
We were delighted to welcome our children back to school and our new families at the start of September. We have a very exciting term planned for our children with rich and engaging opportunities that involves experts, child-led worships as well as access to our new Spiritual Garden.
Our Year 6 children led in our Welcome Worship in church for our new Reception children and their families earlier this month. At this worship, our Year 6 children were also informed that the applications that they had completed to be a Newburgh Prefect had been successful and they each received their badge with great pride. Living out our 6 Gospel Values of Respect, Hope, Trust, Thankfulness, Forgiveness and Friendship is extremely important to us at Newburgh and we know that our Year 6 children will uphold these values and be great role models to all our children.
Later this month we will look forward to holding our whole school Eco and School Council elections in which our Head Boy and Girl will be chosen. These roles provide a great opportunity for our school to strengthen our ever-growing links we have with our local community and we look forward to sharing our projects with you.

Apple Cast
The summer has not been particularly sunny, however, it’s been lovely to see our friends and neighbours of Apple Cast in the garden centre, coffee shop and farm. Thank you all for your continued support and friendship. Lancashire Council has once again commissioned Apple Cast to provide Young Angler and Young Farmer sessions during the summer, which were very successful. We feel that we made a difference to their long summer holiday
Our Artisan Markets continue to be held each month, hopefully it won’t be long until the stalls can be set up outside enjoying the sunshine and good weather. Development on site continues and there is always something to do! Our Apple
Cast furry and feathery family continues to grow. They always enjoy our friends visiting to give them treats and tickles. We look forward to welcoming you all to Apple Cast please call in to say hello when you visit, stay safe and keep well.
Peter Lathom Charity
The Peter Lathom Trust was established in 1701 by Peter Lathom, a local landowner and business man. The work of the Charity continues to the present day. The current trustees make yearly distributions including benefits to schools and to individual pupils meeting the eligibility criteria.
If you feel you could qualify for a grant under this charity, please contact Phil Atty, either by phone 07595 056726 or email atty.pj@gmail.com.
Appleton Fields
The Appleton Fields meadow has had its late summer mow and areas have been tightly strimmed to enable wild flower plugs to be planted. These have been grown by residents and Applecast and planted out by volunteers, adding to the bio-diversity of the site. One area that is already rich in wild flower species will be strimmed later in the hope of allowing seeds to drop and spread.
The hedge whips planted at the end of last year are flourishing as part of the plan to increase habitat for wildlife. In the wood we are starting the second phase of tree thinning as we continue to rebalance the composition of the woodland. The Association is delighted to be working with Small Planet Assessors a Newburgh forestry training company, running City&Guilds courses for apprentices from around Lancashire. The company will advise on selection of trees to be thinned and apprentices will be trained in felling and other woodland skills.
The Association has now agreed a lease with the Parish Council entrusting the management of the site to the Association. This will allow fund raising to begin to support achievement of the master plan.
We depend on the good work of volunteers to help maintain the meadow and wood. Volunteer days are on the last Saturday of the month so come along at 10am and enjoy the company, fresh air and as much or little you feel like doing. Douglas Valley Lions
It is with great regret that Douglas Valley Lions Club have to announce the cancellation of their annual Fireworks Display which for over 40 years has been held at the Red Lion
field, Newburgh.
We live in an age where safety issues at events like the Fireworks Display require more stringent insurance conditions to be met which leads to rising costs. DVLC have always strived to ensure that the event was managed in a very responsible way to ensure a safe and enjoyable event for all who attended, however, a recent
review of our insurance cover and assessment of all resources needed to be in place to ensure a safe event has led to the conclusion that the costs involved, and the manpower required, result in too high a risk for the Club to carry on with the event.
This conclusion has not been taken lightly. The event has always been a highlight of the year for Newburgh and surrounding villages, an event that offered a safe haven for celebrating a traditional Guy Fawkes Night. In addition, it has provided an excellent
fundraising activity which for many years has allowed DVLC to help many people in the district and elsewhere.
Douglas Valley Lions Club would like to thank everyone for their support over many years, we are especially indebted to the help and assistance of all management and staff of the Red Lion.
