News Updates for Newburgh 2023

Published: 1 March 2023

Dear Resident,

It is heartening that there are various support options available for residents in what are undoubtedly challenging times. Details are in this Newsletter and any further opportunities will be posted on the village notice board and on the village Facebook page (Facebook.com/newburghlancs). Residents and groups are invited to inform the Parish Clerk if other services become available.

The Parish Council has decided to keep the amount residents will pay for running the council in 2023/24 at the same level as this year (a total of £36.40 for a Band D property for the year).

On a different note, the Council will enter Newburgh in Lancashire’s Best Kept Village competition. More details will be announced soon but in the mean time residents may like to think about any steps they can take to help make the village look its best. The Council has plans to ensure village “furniture” and signage are clean and in good repair.

For now, Spring is showing itself in the village, ready to enjoy!

West Lancashire Dial a Ride is a Community Transport service for residents of the borough. Service users pay a membership fee and charges per trip. Essential door-to-door transport in familiar red and white minibuses is available for those who cannot access public services. Days out are arranged to market towns.

The Community Car scheme also uses volunteers with their own cars to provide individual journeys, particularly in rural areas. Drivers are security screened, driving assessed and carry identification. See more at http://www.wldar.org.uk/ or phone 01704 893373.

Community Bulletin

West Lancashire Borough Council issues a weekly bulletin with much information including a link to a cost of living support hub describing help with energy costs, financial and food support and debt help www.westlancs.gov.uk/costofliving. The bulletin is being distributed to some village groups and the Parish Council will post appropriate extracts on Facebook and the Notice Board.

Newburgh Nursery is located within Newburgh C.E. Primary School. We provide exceptional care for children from 3 years and this was confirmed with the award of the OUTSTANDING grade in all areas by Ofsted in September 2022. Staff in our setting skilfully support the children to thrive in a highly stimulating indoor and outdoor learning environment that includes an on-site Forest School.

Ofsted quotes:

‘Children make substantial progress in our setting from their starting points

and become more than ready for school.’ ‘Children behave impeccably’.

Newburgh Nursery offers full and half day sessions. We also offer a Breakfast Club from 7:30 am and an After- School Club until 5:45pm. Hot lunches are also available and we offer tailored settling–in arrangements. Childcare vouchers are accepted with up to 30 hours free. Douglas Valley Lions

Lions are groups of men and women who join together in Clubs and try to meet many of the challenges faced by the vulnerable in society who are less able, less advantaged, and/or have special needs – this is done within local, national, and international communities.

For example, buying a wheelchair or providing white goods items to local families in need and on a national basis contributing to funding for ongoing medical research. On an international basis providing quick support to international disasters such as the Turkish earthquake.

The Lions are known for their commitment to projects concerned with reversible and preventable blindness, community health & welfare projects and providing opportunities for young people to develop their personal skills Douglas Valley Lions Club has links with local events such as Newburgh Fair and Parbold Village Show. If you have a particular problem which you think DVLC could help with please contact Lion Steve Jones on 01257 463826 or stevexjones@hotmail.com, or any member of DVLC. If you would like to meet some of our members, we can be found at Newburgh Post Office Coffee Shop at around 10.30am on Tuesday mornings.

Post Office

A reminder that the Post Office is the local Amazon Hub where your parcels can be delivered for collection at your own convenience.

Apple Cast

We’re sure everyone is looking forward to fine Spring weather and longer days to enjoy being outside and meeting friends. We love to catch up and chat with all of our friends and neighbours and welcome everyone to the Apple Cast site whether it be for a walk and some fresh air or lunch in our coffee shop. The animals on the farm enjoy seeing our visitors and miss the human interaction on the cold winter days, much like we humans do. We look forward to seeing everyone soon.

Appleton Fields

Appleton Fields Association is working on a masterplan for the future of the meadow and wood which will be communicated to residents in due course. In the short term we are aiming to increase the area of wild flowers in the meadow both by seeding and planting plugs. We hope this will add to the existing population which includes an area of dandelions (important for early pollinators); two

varieties of marsh orchids which should appear in May up by the wood; a spread of sorrel in the middle of the field and a mass of buttercups throughout the field.

We are always happy to welcome volunteers to help with maintaining and enhancing the site. Volunteer days are on the last Saturday of the month so come along at 10am for an hour or so and enjoy the company, the fresh air and however much or little you feel like doing. For more information contact Chair, Chris Hayes (Tel 07973 684564) or Secretary, Chris Moore (Tel 01257 463471). And follow https://www.facebook.com/appletonfieldsassociation.
