NEWBURGH NEWS April 2022

Dear Resident,

At our meeting in January the Parish Council received the recommendations from the Finance Committee meeting. After a detailed and considered discussion, it was decided to raise the precept (the part of our overall annual budget that we can alter) by 4% for the forthcoming year. This translates to an increase of £1.38 per year for a band D property. The Appleton Fields project is making good progress as members of the association tackle the onerous task of drafting a constitution. Regular monthly work sessions are now underway clearing and preparing for more substantive work later in the year. Volunteers are always welcome particularly those with expertise in fund raising.

Last year, the Parish Council put together a report on the problems caused by traffic in the village. It included a general assessment of the situation as well as descriptions of specific incidents causing danger to pedestrians and other road users. Suggestions of ways that the situation might be improved were also made. We recently received a response from LCC who have offered to meet with us to discuss possibilities – hopefully some progress at last!

.

Keep safe and take care.

Kind regards

Jacky Citarella

Chair

Newburgh Fair 2022

Newburgh Fair will be on Saturday 18th June. It starts at noon, with the popular procession through the village. The children will be interpreting this year’s theme – The Magic of Books. It will be led by this year’s Rose Queen Macey Birch. The fun on the field will include a packed arena programme including the much-loved dog show, and a display by Newburgh Morris dancers. If anyone has a tractor, trailer, truck that could be used in the village procession, we would love to hear from you. fionacasey@live.com or 07982657226.

We look forward to seeing you on the school field on the 18th June.

Appleton Fields

Following the residents’ survey to test ideas for the meadow and wood (next to the Sports Club) volunteer work has now started with the first actions designed to improve access to the entrances. Volunteer days are scheduled for the last Saturday of the month with details posted on

Facebook.com/newburghlancs and Facebook.com/appletonfieldsassociation.

At the same time a working group is beginning to develop a master plan for the site using expert advice and the findings of the survey. It is also planned to constitute the association as a Charitable Organisation run by

Trustees. We are seeking volunteers to act as Trustees and also to support fund-raising expected to be through grants. If you are interested in either of these volunteering opportunities please contact the Association

Chair, Chris Hayes Tel 07973 684564 or Secretary, Chris Moore Tel 01257 463471.

Residents are very welcome to attend the monthly meetings of the Association where we discuss the plans and ideas for the site. The next meeting is at 7pm on Tuesday 19 April at the Sports Club.

Newburgh School

“Let Your Light Shine”

A little normality within a school week and term is something we have been desperate for at our school for some time and it finally appears to be in view. Although for us this just means adding even more richness and opportunities into the school day for our children! We have already startedto invite experts from all fields of life back into school (rather than via zoom) linked to our learning to share their knowledge and inspire our children. Likewise, our school trips have re-started and our strong links with local schools to participate in performing arts, girls’ football and public speaking events are just some of the things scheduled for this term. Enrichment is high on the agenda at our school to ensure our children have memorable learning experiences, opportunities to thrive and are

enabled to ‘Let their Light Shine’.

Post Office

Post office counter services continue to offer a good stock of euros and US dollars. Our shop is well stocked with fresh bread, milk, butter, eggs, cheese, bacon & sausage & other essential groceries and a great selection of wines & local gins. We are constantly updating our range of gorgeous gifts and greetings cards. The coffee shop continues to thrive and serves delicious coffees, teas, sandwiches, pies & sausage rolls, cakes, tray-bakes, pastries and much more. As ever thank you so much for your loyal continued support.

AppleCast

Spring is here finally! It’s been a cold long winter but sunny mornings and later sunsets gives us all a feel-good factor here at AppleCast. We have welcomed three new Dartmoor lambs over the last few days including a set of twins. Jake, Cedrick and Sophie are jumping about enjoying life to the full. The North Ronaldsay girls are due to have their babies very soon! Exciting we think you will agree. There are two new members of the AppleCast family, a wallaby and her baby. They are quite timid but getting used to their new surroundings and visitors.

It’s been lovely to see our friends and neighbours of AppleCast in the garden centre, coffee shop and farm. Thank you to all for your continued support and friendship. Our Artisan Markets continue to be held each month – hopefully it won’t be long until the stalls can be set up outside enjoying the sunshine and good weather. Development on site continues as always, there is always something to do! We hope to make gardens on the back field soon for everyone to enjoy when they visit. Once again we look forward to welcoming you all to AppleCast – please call in to say hello when you visit, stay safe and keep well.

Pavement Parking

Concerns have been raised about the number of cars being parked on pavements in the village. While we understand that there is sometimes a shortage of parking spaces, inconsiderate parking endangers the life of residents by forcing people onto the road. Please consider others and leave adequate space on pavements for pedestrians with prams or buggies, as well as mobility aids such as walkers and scooters.
